That’s a fair point, and I found a source for it. It sounds like she is specifically complaining about the National Guard deployment, because of her immigrant background. That’s great. I would like her to push for things which are virtuous even if she isn’t personally connected. For example, stand up for Canada’s sovereignty and decry the threats that the federal government has made, instead of just begging Canadians to come and give her city money.

I looked up this mayor too. I can’t find much criticism of the federal admins policies. What I do find is that she is an active supporter of Israel, she voted to invade Iraq, and she has been named as one of the US’ most corrupt representatives.

So, maybe you can reflect a bit on why people aren’t very ecstatic that a politician is a Democrat. As far as I’m concerned, she has aligned herself with the leopard-eating party by begging Canadians to be complicit instead of pushing back against the federal admin.

Apologies for the bluntness but that is absolute nonsense. I just took a look at the article on my phone: ZERO clear indication that this is any sort of “liveblog” whatever that’s supposed to mean. It’s from a news organization, it’s not clearly marked as an editorial, the url and menu clearly mark it as “news”, and the screenshot literally says “this article”.

AlphaFold’s success seems to be largely linked to its use of attention-based architecture, similar to GPT, i.e. the architecture used by LLMs. Beyond that, they are both building on work in machine learning and statistics, so I don’t think they are nearly as independent as you are making out.

First of all, your concern is largely addressed, since immigration control can still access law enforcement databases if they have a warrant.

As for why this law exists at all, well it’s actually to the benefit of law enforcement: the idea is that immigrant communities are more likely to cooperate with law enforcement if they aren’t scared that they will be the target of immigration control. This is all the more practical now, when ICE has degraded into a largely lawless and authoritarian organization, since you can imagine most immigrants wouldn’t want to say a word to any police officer unless they at least have the protections of the 2017 TRUST act in place.

Now, what I’m a bit confused about is why you are so up-in-arms about the existence of this law instead of the violation of this law. Surely if you are so law-abiding as you make out to be in your comments, you should be shouting for legal action against the police officers involved in breaking the law.
