“To get out of the political wilderness, and win over not just Democrats but also Independent and moderate voters, policymakers need to loudly state their case for helping middle- and working-class Americans,” Demand Progress corporate power program director Emily Peterson-Cassin said in a statement Thursday. “What these voters want is clear: a populist agenda that takes on corporate power and corruption,” Peterson-Cassin added. “The stakes are too high for Democrats to fixate on a message that only appeals to a minority of independent and Democratic voters.”

    Well, duh…

Maybe some Dems somewhere will pull their head from their ass, read this, and seriously do some thinking on it.

Though, my hopes for current “establishment” Dems are low to the point of nearly non-existent… 🤦‍♀️ 🤡 🖕

You mean politicians like Bernie and AOC?

Or DNC leaders like the chair?

Because all three of them have spent the last couple months doing so in red/purple districts in preparation of flipping the house in the midterms…

        Good for those folks…

Gonna take more than just them to accomplish the goal.

Would that it could be more ubiquitous but I just don’t see that happening. 🤷‍♂️

but I just don’t see that happening

I mean, politics moves at the pace of elections…

It’s not gonna be fast, but it’s happening. The chair wasn’t an abnormally, the voting members of the DNC have been trending progressive for decades.

The only way neoliberals gets control of the party again is if a neoliberal becomes president, and that won’t happen with a fair Dem primary.

I’ve spent literal decades criticizing the DNC, I didn’t do a 180 for no reason.

If you doubt Ken Martin. Look into how he ran Minnesota and the politicians who flourished under him. He’s earned the benefit of the doubt from me.

All I can ask is you vote in the Dem primaries.

It’s a primary, vot for something, you’ll never have to hold your nose in a primary.

It’s a primary, vot for something, you’ll never have to hold your nose in a primary.

It’s a nice notion and all, but in far too many locations, people have to vote strategically even in the primary. Very specific example: my state has a gubernatorial election coming up this year. Red and blue primaries are loaded. One of the blue candidates is a lapdog for the state mob boss power broker. Another blue candidate is a sleazeball with money to have been running conservative talking point ads for the past two months. The rest of the field is a mix of middle of the road types and various levels of progressive. At least some of them are there to split the vote, which is historically what the mob boss power broker has done to protect his people (like, say, his little brother) from getting primaried once entrenched. Whoever survives the primary is likely going to do so with only ~30-40% of the vote. If I vote by platform, it’s effectively tossing my vote away. The only chance at avoiding the sleazeball or lap dog is everyone unifying behind some other (likely) moderate. Failing that, the governor’s race is going to mirror the presidential, with someone at best unlikable vs whatever the conservative grift machine turns out.

And in other more local races, the primary is the election. Shit is that deeply embedded here. Being in a solid blue district has its upshots. Fair and open primaries aren’t one of them.

This shit right here is why FPTP needs to die. There are definitely better and worse options among the proportional voting systems, but all of them are at least better than FPTP.

If it comforts you any, I vote in any/all elections be they primary, local, federal, or otherwise.

I never have to “hold my nose”, but my results have been… somewhat less than inspiring. 🤷‍♂️

Sometimes I feel like I’m talking to my grandfather when he was still alive when I read shit like this.

Grandfather “Son, I just can’t figure out why that starter isn’t cranking.”

Me “Well Pal, we need to check that starter wire but I can’t get to it without dropping the starter off the flywheel first.”

Grandfather “Hell, it ain’t the wire.”

    10-minute argument Grandfather storms off

    3 hours later

Grandfather “I’ve been thinking about that damn starter, we need to check that wire so why don’t you climb up under there and pull that starter so we can check it.”

Me “I pulled it 2 hours ago Pal. The wire is straight fucked. I am going to go up to Auto Zone and get a new one, Ol’boy up there says they have one.”

Grandfather “We don’t need a new wire we can just (insert WWII battlefield fix for bad starter wire on a Willys he’s done 3 times already). I ain’t made of damn money.”

20-minute argument about fixing it right Grandfather storms off.

    3 hours later

Grandfather “Grab your keys I need you to take me up to the Auto Zone to pick up a wire for that starter. Might as well fix it right so we don’t have to keep fixing it.”

Me “I already got it. Just finished putting it all back together and was just about to start it up.”

    Jeep starts right up

This really comes down to technocrats vs the people. The technocrats want to double down on neoliberalism because many economists and other experts are telling them it’s the only way. The field of economics, especially in the US is mostly just a cult of free market evangelists. Technocrats like Klein believe in listening to experts, which I would normally strongly agree with, but I just can’t listen to experts who advise that we double down on the same god damn policies that have left so many millions of Americans feeling left behind, desperate, and hopeless. It’s insanity.

The economy became a religion for the technocrats. This is a huge issue as you’re fighting a belief and not facts.

Democrats need to purge ranks of MAGA-lite members like Cory, Chuck, Nancy, and…well…all of’em except Jasmine, AOC, Ro, and Bernie.

At this point, too many are ready to burn it all down simply because they see the lies and complicity.

You don’t win people over by being the lesser of two evils.

What was protecting them was a biased DNC who were fine losing a seat to a Republican to shut up a progressive.

We have an unbiased DNC now.

Which is all we need, the DNC doesn’t need to worry about kicking out incumbents the voters hate. We just need to let voters pick what they want in primaries.

And now that it’s going to be competitive again, we’ll see a lot more retire anyways.

Can you picture Pelosi actually having to do debates and campaigning against a 40 year old progressive with actual authentic grass roots support?

It’s funny: before the change in DNC leadership, @givesomefucks@lemmy.world stood out for how harshly critical he was of the Democrats, to the point that he often got downvoted because people thought he was some kind of concern troll. Then, of course, all his dire predictions came true.

It’s almost as if he’s paying close attention and understands the DNC very well.

I won’t believe it until I see it for at least three election cycles.

And I won’t be holding my breath.

I’ve been disappointed every single time and have zero hope.
