After 3 decades in IT let me share some wisdom.

What you describe is not ok, and it’s just letting the company walk all over you because it sounds like nobody had the experience to push back. There should be a senior guy somewhere in that team going “yo this is bullshit, we’re not doing this” and making the company define the criteria so you can say yes or no. Otherwise you just don’t comply, and everyone on the team has to be onboard with that. Gotta have boundaries in this career or they will literally own you and all your free time, and if shit hits the fan, they will scapegoat you in a heartbeat.

They need you more than you need them. Never forget that. There are lots, and lots, and lots of unfilled IT jobs out there.

Who read their old yearbooks while they’re on the toilet? You’re supposed to read them once every few years when you find them while cleaning out storage to move to a new place, bringing all activity to a halt for an hour or two while you drown in nostalgia. You know, like normal people.

Mainly because of that. Spinning rust drives are perfect for large media libraries.

There isn’t a hard drive made in the last 15 years that couldn’t handle watching media files. Even the SMR crap the manufacturers introduced a while back could do that without issue. For 4k video you’re going to see average transfer speeds of 50MB/s and peak in the low 100MB/s range, and that’s for high quality videos. Write speed is irrelevant for media consumption, and unless your hard drive is ridiculously fragmented, seek speed is also irrelevant. Even an old 5400 RPM SATA drive is going to be able to handle that load 99.99% of the time. And anything lower than 4K video is a slam dunk.

Everything I just said goes right out the window for a multi-user system that’s streaming multiple media files concurrently, but the vast majority of people never need to worry about that.

And you also apparently can’t read user names to see who said what.

I’m real curious why you say that. I’ve been designing systems with high IOPS data center application requirements for decades so I know enterprise storage pretty well. These drives would cause zero issues for anyone storing and watching their media collection with them.

True, but it’s super cheap. I pay less for a year of Usenet and indexer than I’d pay for 2 months of basic cable or just about any streaming service.

I have been using Frugal and nzbGeek for years and have no complaints.

I solve it by paying way too much for a block of static IPs.

Usenet still exists.

For the government, it’s always worth it as long as the funding is flowing. After all, it’s not like they are footing the bill. You and I are paying for them to spy on us.

When I have an edible or light up I am making a conscious decision that that’s the end of my traveling day and I’m not leaving the house again, at least not by driving anywhere. It’s just common sense. I don’t care what it is, alcohol, weed, high test cough syrup, your vicodin and muscle relaxers, doesn’t matter. Don’t drive impaired. If you’ve ingested those things, you’re impaired or about to be. Nice to see the pushback against the legalization fearmongers and their lack of evidence, though.
