  • It’s still millionaires saving us from billionaires, which shows how difficult it is to run a relay. If the main Bluesky relay enshittifies and everyone jumps ship Bluesky 2 then that is still a single point of failure, what if the funding dries up or the millionaires get bored? The users would struggle to cover the costs themselves.

It feels like that amount of money could be better spent on adding features (like independent IDs) as well as building better bridges, even the ability to import a Bluesky profile to Mastodon or the *key forks. Forget adding a fire exit and build some escape pods.

The whole piece comes across as… apologetic:

If I had my way, all those people enjoying themselves on Bluesky would come and enjoy themselves in the Fediverse.

And you get the feeling this isn’t the solution he’d have wanted but it at least looks like some.kind of solution so he’s prepared to support it, albeit grudgingly.

  • Would the government even bother to check, for example, a Mastodon server with a thousand users?

Impossible to say at this point. You may get the full Eye of Sauron treatment if something bad happens and you’ve just ignored the laws. If you demonstrate you have made an effort (and the guidelines suggest small websites need only read the summaries and use the online tools) then you have started a dialogue and, if there is an issue, it might just need a chat rather than fines.

Out of interest, is there a summary or something?

Best one I’ve read so far is this.

I’ve started a Matrix space for folks on the Fediverse dealing with British issues like this and there is an OSA room where I’ll add more resources as they pop up on my radar.

I’ll also be reaching out to Admins of specifically British instances on the Fediverse too. We can probably pool our thoughts and not have to keep reinventing the wheel.

I have a freer week coming up and hope to make more progress on this.

  • He’s pretty unbiased, and explains it all really well for those of us with no knowledge of how that world works.

From my, admittedly limited, knowledge of high finance, he seems to know the score and be able to talk about it clearly and without being biased towards it.

Can you explain the link aggregator business once again for the heard of thinking? I’m not sure what you mean, but I’m assuming it’s something I’ve either completely ignored or misunderstood

Like Digg and Reddit, Lemmy is like earlier discussion forum software but set to favour the new post over a new comment and the key is the link, especially on Lemmy. So if I post the same link as someone else has done it will automatically add a link to that post too. It’s also why we prefer people post archive links in.the body of the post and the original link as the main one.

  • I’m not sure they do agree, with Facebook’s recent changes it sets them up for a head-on confrontation with the UK and EU. They probably didn’t bother arguing with an underling when they are just going to try and get Trump to bludgeon us into submission.

We’ll see how well such laws (and the food safety ones) fare in the face off the threats of major sanctions. I hope Starmer sticks to his guns but we might face a situation where the big social media firms (who are the target of these laws) get let off the hook, while smaller British websites struggle to jump through the hoops.
