While I highly disagree with the concept of turning the office of president into even more of a joke by purposefully electing more celebrities, someone like Nick Offerman or Robert Downey Jr. Would easily be able to defeat just about any Republican candidate just on popularity alone.

gordon@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Biden says it’s ‘time to outlaw’ AR-15 after Trump assassination attemptEnglish1·1 year agoYou can get semi auto hunting rifles with a capacity of 6-10 rounds. I’m as anti gun-violence as anyone, and generally agree that more gun control is not a bad idea, but outright banning AR-15s is not the answer.
There are too many already out there to make a dent, and anyone can 3D print a lower receiver that will will hold up for at least 20 rounds.
80% lowers are a thing and you can “finish” them with basic hand tools and a drill, then you have an unregistered firearm.
There are many other ways to acquire one illegally or semi-legally, but they are currently pretty “obscure” since it’s so easy and cheap to buy a lower and assemble your own. Banning legal sales will only bolster the alternative methods.
My first email was Firstname_Lastname@aol.com. When aol became insufferable and a challenger appeared, I made Firstname.Lastname@gmail.com.
Gmail lets you add "."s anywhere and it’ll still work, so all my spammy or whatever things I sign up for are Firs.T.Nam.E.L.Astnam.E@gmail.com or some random variation. Makes it easy to delete all the junk.
This is exciting, now just to wait until it’s available in my state.

I’m thinking a vasectomy is the next thing, but it isn’t covered on my insurance and finding a doctor is intimidating.

However I’ve never heard of in-floor cooling before. I wonder how effective it would be since heat rises? I think you’d just have a cool floor and hot muggy air. Also the floor would condense water constantly so your floor would be slippery and if you have carpet it would be wet / damp constantly.
gordon@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Oxford study proves heat pumps triumph over fossil fuels in the coldEnglish81·2 years agoIt definitely can. If yours can’t then it’s likely just the thermostat wired wrong.
gordon@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Oxford study proves heat pumps triumph over fossil fuels in the coldEnglish22·2 years agoYou think you are being a smartass but that’s exactly what heat pumps do. The only functionality difference between an AC unit and a heat pump is a reversing valve.
But without a reversing valve you could put your AC unit in backwards and heat your house in the winter.
The whole premise of an AC unit is to take the heat from inside the house and put it outside, leaving you with cooler air inside.
So in the winter a heat pump simply reverses the flow of the freon and moves the heat from outside to inside. Yes. You are “cooling the whole neighborhood” when you run a heat pump.
gordon@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the stupidest rule your school ever enforced?English27·2 years agoI’m not saying it’s right, just that’s their rationale. I literally discussed this with a middle school principal a few days ago and that was what she said.
Regardless of what you think about the policy, the fact is that your kids will have to abide by it.
Fact: if your kid is being bullied, they need to communicate to a person of authority. Answering a bully with violence is the wrong choice 99% of the time. They are usually bigger than you and have backup.
Also usually it doesn’t progress to a fight the very first time, usually it takes weeks, and during this time you would have many opportunities to tell a teacher or something.
Again, not advocating that this is right, but that’s their rationale.
gordon@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the stupidest rule your school ever enforced?English213·2 years agoLooking at it from the other side, it’s actually rare that an innocent kid is beat up without context.
Usually there’s 2 kids that have a beef and have been egging each other on for days. Eventually one kid says something and the other kid snaps and makes the first move but the second kid was just as guilty.
If you only look at “who started it” the second kid gets off scot free, while the first kid gets punished. Not really fair.
"Zero tolerance " attempts to fix this by recognizing that both kids likely played a part.
