Kimono literally just means “thing to wear”.
I’ve heard multiple Japanese people tell me how funny it is how much foreigners concern themselves over wearing… Clothes.

Hard disagree. He didn’t say the actress was prettier. He said the actress was pretty.
If someone being called pretty makes you do defensive that you immediately need validation that you’re prettier… that’s textbook insecurity.
A confident person would simply agree or disagree without needing to compare the character to themselves.
Does HER reaction imply confidence in any way?
Her being prettier than the actress doesn’t mean the actress isn’t pretty. Her escalation and need for validation is INSANELY insecure.
“We have less than a 50% prosecution rate for murder.”
You sure that’s the argument you want to broadcast?
Yay, marketing. The nutritional value of the cereal is probably next to nothing, but if you ate everything else, you’d get all the nutrients you’d need. 1% of the total is still “a part” of the complete breakfast. Technically not false advertising.
Basically, the more food you see, the less nutritional value in the actual cereal.
Do something about it or shut up, Joe.
You’ll get excited by the prospect of lining up your errands in town so that you can get 3-4 done at the same time rather than making separate trips.
I understand this sentiment because I had a similar story growing up, but I’ve had to come to terms that the internet of that era does not exist anymore.
Now we have these corporations who made it their goal to algorithmically trick you into spending more and more time engaged with their website for ad revenue, not caring how angry or misinformed people get in the meantime. It used to be a place we could escape to, but has turned into just another echo chamber/prison and worst of all - we’re addicted to it.
I think places like Mastodon and the Fediverse can help bridge this gap, but on the whole, the internet is just not a safe place for developing brains anymore.
The difference is being labeled “abnormal” by a person you know vs. by society. As a society, we used to beat children who used their left hand to write until they started acting “normal”.
The thought itself that left-handedness and right-handedness are different is not harmful. However, when you start labeling one as ‘normal’ and the other as a ‘generic abnormality’, you start shifting people’s perspectives and suddenly we get a situation where we call left-handed people “Sinister”. (The word literally means left-handed. We added the evil connotations afterwards because of the prejudice against left-handed people. We also did the same in reverse for “dexterity”.)
You might not see the harm immediately in the small scale, but it’s absolutely intended to be a step towards dehumanizing queer people. As others have said as well, homosexuality is incredibly common in nature. Most giraffe sex is gay sex. It’s just not taught in school because… say it with me… “It’s abnormal.”
It’s really not though. It’s just different, and different doesn’t mean bad.
Your argument has been used countless times in history for a number of “abnormalities” that turn out to just be differences without distinction.
“Listen, I’m a supporter of red-heads, but don’t we basically understand that it’s a genetic abnormality? Maybe ‘illness’ is a bit harsh, but they’re just not common enough in society to be considered normal.”
This is how it’s done. I don’t play the game, but I’m interested if this is how their community is moderated.
Bob actually tried to milk the insurance companies for money, IIRC. He wasn’t entirely a monster, but definitely had no chill.
Dr. Bob Kelso: What the hell people? I saw Maggie Kent in the park. Why didn't we treat her?
Nurse Carla Espinosa: She has no insurance.
Dr. Bob Kelso: Well, why didn't we do what we always do? Why didn't you fix it while I turned my back and pretend not to notice? You know the dance.
Good job, buddy! You’re getting it! Now just go one step further and think about what it means to pay for insurance. How does that change who pays the doctors and nurses out of those three options? You’re so close!
And yet when they don’t cover “the costs associated with it”, you’d still defend these insurance companies because it wasn’t their responsibility to provide healthcare in the first place, right?
Yep. We were joking that no one is egging houses anymore because it’s up to 50¢ a throw. It’s like carnival prices.
Especially to people who SPECIFICALLY paid you to provide life-saving care.
“Officer, I didn’t drive into the crowd of people, I simply took my foot off the brakes and steering wheel. That’s barely an action! In fact, it reduced the number of actions.”
What are you talking about?
Who do you think designed the murdering, capitalist US health care system?
Yep. It also leads to corruption if you’re not making a living wage. You’ll need to supplement your income somewhere, so why not do it while on the job and kill two birds with one stone?
I understand that it’s a loan word, but my point was that a kimono’s cultural meaning is largely similar to how we would say, “Let me go find something to wear”. A kimono is a specific way to cut a single piece of cloth into a garment, but the result is still just clothes.
It’s like policing what is or isn’t “queso cheese”. It’s really not that big of a deal.
