Perfectly said, and I’ve been reaching the same conclusion lately.
I too attempted harm reduction while being disappointed in the democrats. And we all know plenty of people stayed home or went third party for some of those reasons.
But damn it, this country turned out to vote FOR Trump. The democrats didn’t just miss the mark and Trump got lucky or whatever. Trump won decisively because he’s the kind of asshole that a huge part of our culture loves.
I remember seeing something similar in the W days.
Especially if it’s one of those joke guns that shoots out a literal red flag with “BANG!” on it.
That’s what I get stuck on every time. Yeah, the democrats are useless and need to make big changes. They carry a lot of blame. But it’s not just people being fed up with their useless asses. The voters turned out in big numbers to vote FOR Trump. We expected the results to take a long time and be contentious again, but the morning after Election Day his victory was already clear.
It’s just… sad? Discouraging?

Absolutely. Likewise, prescribed medications for mental heath vary by individual and they are essentially trial and error with some educated guessing by your doctor.

Weed doesn’t have to reliably turn the worst murderers in society into community serving pacifists every single time in order to be effective and worthwhile. That’s just perfect being the enemy of good.
Like another reply said, drugs can change perspective which is how people change themselves. It certainly worked for me with both weed and ketamine (both legally sourced with medical providers involved, and only several times total with the ketamine).
One of the nice things about Lemmy is that people are willing to actually discuss things with multiple sentences and even paragraphs (gasp) rather than it being a fire hose of quips and one-liners.

It’s very close to matching the Trump votes of Texas and Florida, but they were a bit ahead.

A part of me is with you. The end goal is equally applied rule of law, so it’s important to respect the system when you’re trying to improve it, right?
However, I think you could argue that the jury and its power to nullify is very much an intended check within the system. It’s kind of an ideal situation where “the people” get to bookend the legal process. They vote for the people making the laws, and they have the final OK before somebody gets sent to prison.
But that is all assuming people perceive the system as working for them to a reasonable degree. If it’s simply broken then why would people go along with the BS while hoping and voting for a better system? They can still vote for a better system while reducing harm in other ways.
There’s also the pragmatic side of me that wants to see good results for humanity (which includes our environment) regardless of the text of the local laws. And yeah, it’s very much a two-edged sword when random citizens do what they think is “right.” Bad examples of it are everywhere. But taking things case by case, what Luigi did was akin to shooting a serial killer between their murder stops. And more importantly, it shines a giant public light on the fact that real people suffer and die so that other people who are already set for life will make $10 million next year instead of only $9 million.
The problem with that is that they care about their patients, and it’s their patients who will suffer the most when the insurance company tells them both to fuck themselves.
You are correct that it doesn’t necessarily invalidate points they raise. But if you’re dealing with somebody who is crazy or corrupt AND they represent the party famous for arguing in bad faith, it’s probably a waste of time to evaluate whether or not you can trust a given thing they say.

In my experience it’s usually the magats who are the ones defending asshole and/or immoral behavior by pointing out that the offender is acting within the bounds of the law or within their legal rights.
Given my recent experiences with Microsoft stuff at work, I assume their strategy is to get Copilot to be the de facto standard and the only “IT Approved” option in all the M365-using workplaces.
I wonder what the balance is between that killer conditioning & training coming right back to the streets versus an unexpected career that takes the person away from the gang.
