If that malfunctioning drive was not encrypted you need to break out some heavy tools tool ensure that data is destroyed.

If by heavy tools, you mean a screwdriver and an angle grinder, then yeah, but it’s not that hard in reality.

I don’t encrypt my entire drive, but I do have encrypted directories for my sensitive data. If I did encrypt an entire drive, it would only be the drive containing my data not the system drive.

It can be much easier to install a PPA than using the command line to do so. I think it’s high time it was as easy as clicking on a (verified) “install this repo” type button on a page, and confirming, entering your sudo password from the launchpad website. I’d even be OK with building it into Discover.

They have the .deb at the top of their download page, no need to install the PPA repository if you don’t want. You can’t get any more than “just downloading and double clicking an exe deb” than that on Ubuntu.

I will admit though, I wish there were an easier way to install PPAs.

You realize your computer won’t work without scripts, don’t you? And if you want your computer to do something it doesn’t do on its own, a simple script will make it do what you want. If that is your definition of sucking, then you need to go back to Windows, which is also loaded with scripts, by the way, so that sucks too.

I think AppImages suck as well, but this is not a reason for my dislike. A simple script that you can run on startup will fix that problem.

BBSes were pre-public internet, not part of the internet. The connected ones were a separate network in and of themselves. I ran a WWIV BBS in the late 80s to early 90s that had its own networking system allowing communication, and even file sharing between instances. It was pretty sophisticated for the time, but hella slow over my 14.4k modem.

WWIV did migrate to using the internet for connection, and maybe others did as well. Perhaps that’s what you were considering with this comment?

I use a chargie. It’s a physical Bluetooth connected device that connects between the phone and charger and lets you set your own charge limit. Works great with my wireless charger at night. I also have one for my tablet.

I moved to Reddit when Digg destroyed itself. It wasn’t too hard to make the switch, although it did take a bit of getting used to. I imagine it’ll be the same this time, or maybe a bit easier, as the format of lemmy.ml is not too different in appearance from Reddit.
