For systems that…may experience some degree of vacuum…it’s common to use lead solder still because it doesn’t tin whisker so unfortunately it’s still around for some of the stuff I’ve worked on.

Honestly I think he oversold the effectiveness of the systems. The work I did is still ongoing so I’m up to speed on the available systems, though mostly on the RF side. If you watch the stuff coming out of Ukraine the drones aren’t really being impeded all that much and if you know how to use ardupilot and selectively enable your data link you can pretty much get away with whatever you want because the US isn’t gonna allow anyone to jam GPS right next to multiple major airports. If you want to avoid even relying on GPS there are starting to be mature solutions out there too.

The keep out databases are mostly nonsense, it’s a big point of contention in the community. If you live near a random hospital helipad or municipal airport and try to fly in your backyard below the tree canopies with a drone with less mass than a bird you are still blocked.

They’re the only hobbyist manufacturer with any scale. If you look at the Dedrone stats it’s just entirely the DJI show followed by AUTEL by a mile and then DIY stuff. The DIY drones can be built from anything and can be trivially designed to avoid surveillance so you’re not gonna get anywhere with them anyway.

I’ve done some work related to the anti drone systems and I assure you even the best of the best is an absolute joke against all but the most naive operator. The ultimate drone defense right now is somewhere between magnum #6 bird and #4 turkey shot :/

Yeah the FPV community is way better because they actually have to know what they’re doing mostly. They’re mildly noncompliant but only regarding the regs that shouldn’t apply to the size of stuff they fly; RID, registration, and BVLOS don’t make sense for airframes lighter than a goose. They tend to avoid other people because they understand the public is wary of drones and they’re wary of Karens and untrained cops. They put far more hours on their airframes than any of the other amateur operators but every single time I’ve been near a drone doing something dangerous, stupid, or annoying it was a DJI.

IDK, most of the kits require soldering (because the industry is fundamentally braindead) and if you go look at the various online communities, you’ll quickly see that this is one hell of a filter.

Honestly from my experience this could be chainsaws alone. They’re by far the worst thing I’ve come across as a lefty and I’m fairly ambi. Most other chiral two handed power tools either don’t matter as much or can trivially be swapped around like angle grinders, trimmers, etc.

I used to do some work with Qualcomm and ARM IP. They both need to die. ARM is holding back all manner of technologies with their absolutely insane and byzantine licensing scheme and Qualcomm is one of the most evil tech companies in existence, you just don’t hear about them because their particular evil is constrained to B2B interactions.

Depending on the chipset you can usually set rtc wakeup timers, though that typically implies sleep rather than power off so you’d still have some power draw when the device should be off. Similarly, if you’re trying to log GPS you’ll have to wake up for enough time to get a GPS lock so even at something like a 10 minute logging interval you’d get some noticable power consumption. Much much more if you’re trying to log voice or video.

Did you read the article? There were a couple cases were very early Android phones were modified to appear to be off but stayed on. This is fairly common knowledge, but it’s not particularly hard to defeat.

Everything your phone does requires a deterministic amount of power. Spying on people in particular requires even more power than normal because you need to run the power hungry gps in addition to the modem and cpu.

If you turn off the device it should be significantly cooler to the touch, not a degree above ambient. If it’s at 100% charge but a power bank with a read out is showing it still charging, that’s a problem. Is the bootloader image different? You can verify that to some extent. When you turn it back on has it been drawing down the battery anyway? Does it require an unlock password instead of biometrics as it normally would (assuming a particularly sloppy setup)?

This isn’t rocket surgery, in reality nobody is modding everyone’s phone to stay on forever because unless you’re an absolute troglodyte (aka the fucking old school mafia bosses they did this to) it’s going to be painfully obvious your phone is acting weird.
