Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never seen anything of value posted on mastodon or Twitter. The format doesn’t seem to create meaningful discussions

One big reason is because minorities tend to be left leaning. This is one of the reasons people are against Puerto Rico becoming a state.

A few years ago a pretty big state university I worked at didn’t use any kind of NAT. They had such a large public network space(a lot of universities do) that they would just give hosts public IPs. You could go home and just RDP into your desktop. Universities can be a wild wild west.

When people complain about Windows in a work environment, I wonder really what their complaints are. I mean I don’t like windows either but at the end of the day you’re just using visual studio and maybe a terminal emulator to access your work. Your codebase is on a test server or production server.

That said, my mind was blown when I used my first mac. Even the best windows laptop I’ve been given at work would maybe last 4 hours without charging. I can use my Mac for almost two days without charging it which makes going to the office that much easier when I can sit outside. I don’t know if Windows is just extremely inefficient with its resource management or of it’s all the bullshit spyware companies bloat every PC with but if the company absolutely won’t let you install a Linux desktop OS I’d just ask for a Mac. Plenty of staff use them at universities

Bill Burr is probably the only person I know of who didn’t completely change once he got rich and famous, he’s a national treasure at this point

I’m pretty sure the only anti lgbtq comments bill burr has ever made was a bit about how when you watch something intimate the mind tries to place you in the scenario and when it’s two guys kissing it’s really hard to stomach, but Bill Burr has always leaned left and I honestly doubt he cares in the slightest about other people’s gender or sexuality

The university AND jstor were pretty quick to get as uninvolved from that mess as quick as possible, so it really doesn’t matter… But what you’re saying has nothing to do with the case and is also not true. “Broke and entered” implies forced physical access into a clearly forbidden area. The network closet was a room that was left unlocked and was frequently used by janitorial staff to put junk in.

I mean my vote hasn’t mattered in the last 2 elections. My state hasnt flipped blue since Obama. There’s a lot of situations where voting is a waste of time. Making that not be true is what’s going to increase voter turnout, not trying to shame them for something they’re not responsible for

What’s the point of saying that here? If you’re an American who could vote and you’re on Lemmy there’s a 99.9% chance you voted blue. But even if that weren’t the case, all of this transpired while we had a Democrat in office, so it’s just a horrible continuation of an already existing trend

I honestly think college is mostly a cultural staple for middle income families at this point. It’s four years of “discovering yourself” and postponing adulthood.

The benefits of a college education are pretty difficult to quantify, unless your intended career requires undergrad.

However, building a career from 0 is pretty painful, and I don’t think most people would have the stomach for it.

If it makes you feel any better, I intentionally never use products that have intentionally repetitive messaging or earworm tendencies out of spite. Though I know I’m probably in the minority

I’d believe that overhauls in this sense means that they have completely restructured/breathed new life to their campaign and thus gained favorability

Basically because every time this happens the burden of debt is passed towards the tax payers. They just built a long toll lane in my city in what was a 2 lane highway. Adding another lane or two would have alleviated traffic immensely. The company that built it owns all profits for approx 50 years. What could have been a 5 lane highway is still two except now you have the option of paying a ridiculous amount of money to not have to deal with the traffic. This is money that could have been spent on improving the city’s other methods of transportation, trains, bicycles, etc.

It doesn’t affect me personally. I ride a motorcycle every day. It’s just painful to see how private interests are almost never in line with what’s best for constituents

Yup. The corruption is blatant, and the worst part is, they don’t even hide it… the threat of impending doom keeps the voters subservient. Instead of pointing out the corruption, we equivocate. I’m not a nihilist or a pessimist and most certainly do not want Trump to win. But refusing to acknowledge the blatant corruption puts us right where we started.

What’s mind boggling about it? Bernie Sanders wasn’t a prophet. He ran on a platform and we believed in his candidacy. Just because he bent over for Hillary doesn’t mean that suddenly now she’s a great candidate. If he had to bite down on the rag, I don’t fault him for that. But asking people to get on board “just this once” every election is just a carrot on the stick. It’s always “but this one is SUPER important, set yourself aside and pick the lesser evil, eventually we can get what we want.” There is no “eventually” and there never will be as long as you and others like you show that you’re willing to throw your ideals away because of this season’s boogieman
